Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies

Statement of Purpose

The IIS, in supporting the vision of Michigan Tech to prepare students to create the future, will be a catalyst, serve as a resource, and build bridges that contribute to the creation of new knowledge and the development of outstanding programs at the intersection of existing and emerging disciplines within the university community.

Mission Statement

IIS will create, grow, and nurture interdisciplinary educational programs, research, scholarship, and service that transcend school/college boundaries. It will provide a resource base to foster collaboration across the university and to support interdisciplinary activities that promote an innovative, creative, and active, discovery-based learning environment.

Vision:  for Michigan Tech to be recognized as a leader in creating new knowledge and in developing outstanding programs at the intersection of existing and emerging disciplines.

Goals:

  • To maximize problem-solving efficiency by tapping into the knowledge and expertise of people from a variety of disciplines across campus
  • To train students to be innovative thinkers and effective leaders
  • To give students opportunities to maximize their potential individually and corporately through collaborative project development and implementation
  • To provide students with real-world experiences that will enhance their education and future marketability
